Root Canal Treatments (or Endodontics)

Root canal treatment, more scientifically known as endodontics, describes the treatment of injury to or disease in the dental pulp. Dental pulp is the common term for the living soft tissues and cells found at the centre of the tooth.

This dental pulp can become prone to infection if exposed. Common causes of this undesirable exposure include extreme decay, very deep fillings, physical trauma resulting in cracks, and gum disease.

Once the dental pulp is exposed to infection, it is critical that the tooth be treated as soon as possible, as a build-up of bacteria (particularly right at the tip of the root) can result in the formation of an abscess. Aside from being very painful and, as they are often accompanied by considerable swelling, unsightly, a serious infection can result in damage to the bone supporting the tooth and, ultimately, the loss of the tooth entirely.

Treatment of Root Canals

The tooth is drilled, the infected dental pulp is removed and the hollow is thoroughly irrigated. Once we are confident there is no chance of re-infection, the tooth is filled.

Root canal treatment has become synonymous with pain, particularly in America where the phrase "I'd rather have root canal" is often bandied about, but the truth is that this is a relatively painless and simple procedure. Where possible, we try to complete the treatment in a single session. In complicated cases, however, this isn't always feasible.

I've heard root canal treatment can discolour the tooth

This doesn't happen very often, but occasionally, root canal treatment can result in some discolouration of the tooth. Fortunately, The Ultimate Cosmetic Suite's holistic approach means we also have a team of highly-qualified and experienced practitioners in cosmetic dentistry on hand to provide remedial treatment should this be required. Possible options include crowns, veneers or bleaching. However, a thorough consultation at our Liverpool dental surgery will provide you with all the information you require before progressing with treatment.
